The Offensiveness of Affirmative Action
Second in a Series on Affirmative Action
In the beginning, Affirmative Action was designed to rectify past inequities. Because African-American were discriminated against in the past for most jobs, we need to balance the scales.
Now minorities use Affirmative Action as a means to get promotions they don't deserve, to go to collages they are not qualified to attend, and to lower the standards for jobs that require excellence. We're hiring and promoting people based on skin color instead of rewarding hard work and excellence. We're promoting students from grade to grade in inner cities, because they live in inner cities, not because they can read and write. We're lowering the physical strength and agility standards for firefighters and police officers, because the average female can't meet those standards.
People should never be rewarded because they fall into a certain class of people. We used to promote people because they were white males. Now we promote people because they are minorities. Both practices are equally racist.
Students should be promoted to the next grade because they meet minimal educational standards. We are doing no one a favor by promoted a student because they live in predominately ethnic cities. What breeds poverty is the idea that we graduate students, who can't read.
It's important for firefighters and police officers to meet physical standards that the average person can't. They need to be able to lift 200 pound bodies from a burning building. They need to be able to chase criminals down the street without getting winded. The fallacy is that women can't meet these standards. The truth is that the average woman can't meet these standards, but the reality is that the average man can't either. That's what training is for. There are strong women who will make great police officers, hire them. But don't lower the standards.
The Real Point - We Don't Need Your Help
It is racist and sexist to say that I need a helping hand because of the color of my skin or because of my gender. It is racist to say that because I am a minority, I can't attain the American dream on my own.
The worst is to say that minorities are incapable of passing the SAT's, going to college or understanding basic reading and writing, because of the color of their skin. Liberals truly believe that the SAT's and other aptitude test are inherently racist and only white people can score high. If this is true, then you are buying in the idea that white people are genetically superior to everyone else. That's racist thinking. Asians score higher than whites on most academic tests, and not because we're genetically superior, but because education is very important in the asian culture and hard work goes hand in hand with high test scores.
The 60's are over. Racism is not gone, but it's no longer a significant factor in succeeding in America. Let's allow the content of our character to say whether we succeed or fail.
Next time...Why Democrats lie about supporting minorities.
