Democrats and Their Lying Record against Minorities

Third in a series on Affirmative Action

Democrats want America to believe that they are on the side of minorities. They tout their support of Affirmative Action programs and they throw money and legislation two the minority groups of the day. But do they really care? I submit that Democrats pander to minorities for their votes. Why do I say this? Let's look at their record.

Abraham Lincoln

Let's start from the very genesis of the Republican party. Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican President. After defeating the Democratic candidate, Lincoln rallied the national to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Not to the delight of Democratics, who wanted to continue slavery.

Civil Rights Act of 1964

Who voted for the Civil Rights Act? One would think that Democrat would have been more supportive of the Civil Rights Act because of their Democratic President. The reality is that only 63% of the Democrats supported the amendment. It was actaully the Republicans with a higher percentage of 79%. It was the overwhelming support by the Republicans that helped push the Amendment over the 2/3rd majority.

Here's an interesting fact. Al Gore, Sr. was the most vocal opponent of the Civil Rights Act. Al Gore, Jr. has never renounce his father's actions. Here are the facts:

• Al Gore Sr. voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
• Al Gore Sr. participated in a 74 day filibuster to delay and weaken the legislation.
• Al Gore Sr. proposed an amendment to the Civil Rights Act that would have kept federal funds flowing to schools that defied court desegregation orders. It was defeated by a vote of 74-25. 23 Democrats and 1 Republican voted for it.

Al Gore even lied during the campaing. In a speech to the NAACP, Vice President Gore said his father lost his Senate seat because he supported civil rights legislation. A typical Democrat lie to distort the truth.

In his remarks upon signing the Civil Rights Act, President Lyndon Johnson praised Republicans for their "overwhelming majority." He did not offer similar praise to his own Democratic Party.

Affirmative Action

Let's not forget, who first instituted Affirmative Action, President Richard Nixon. The purpose was to correct past wrongs and level the playing field. It is the Democrats that twisted Affirmative Action into an entitlement.

The Clinton Cabinet

The first black president, William Clinton, said that his cabinet would reflect America. Of the 29 men and women who served in the Clinton cabinet, only 8 were minorities (28%) and only 5 were women (17%). At the end of Clinton's term there were only 3. The highest position was Secretary of the Commerce held by Ron Brown and Norm Mineta.

Let compare this with the Bush cabinet. Of the 16 men and women to serve, 5 are minorities (31%) and 3 are women (18%). The top position is Secretary of State Colin Powell. Let's also not forget Condelezza Rice, African American female as National Security Advisor. Then again Clinton had Jocelyn Elders.

The statistics for Bush may not be staggering, but the reality is that the Bush cabinet is by far more diverse than Clinton's cabinet ever was. Bush placed minorities and women in the significant positions, something Clinton never did. All things that you never expect from a Republican.

(12/8/04) When President Clinton was re-elected in 1996, he had to replace members of his cabinet who resigned. Most reappointments were white. President Bush on the other hand strives to replace members with minorities. His first Supreme Court appointment is expected to be a minority.

The Democratic Party

The Black Caucus was virtually ignored given very little by way of power in the party. When Democrats need to show us that they love minorities, they bring out Jessie Jackson. The only use that Democrats have with minorities is their votes. If you see an African American on talk shows speaking for the party, they are only limited to issues of race.

Let's Not Lie to Ourselves

The next time you hear a Democrat tell you that Republicans are racist. Remember that this Democrat wants your vote. They also distort the truth regarding the Republican record. For another discussion, but Democrats needs to keep minorities in poverty, so that they will keep their voting base. It's in their best interest that minorities remain in poverty and dependent upon the social programs of Democrats.
