A series in making the case against affirmative action...
The Case Against Affirmative Action
I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a
nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin
but by the content of their character.
- Martin Luther King, Jr. (August 28, 1963)
As a member of a minority group and as a conservative thinker,
I am often conflicted in the area of civil rights. It saddens me
that for an idea that was meant to help has driven me to take a
position against affirmative action.
I know for certain that if
I grew up in the 60's I would have been marching and protesting
for my civil rights in living in this great country. But things
have changed. Today's civil rights leaders have strayed from
my personal philosophy and I can't even imagine supporting a Jessie
Jackson nor be involved in Asian American politics.
The History of Affirmative Action
Enacted by Nixon, there was a need to level the playing field.
Seeing minorities as fellow Americans became a foreign concept
to many white Americans. All Americans had to quickly shift their
thinking toward racial equality. This was still apparent to me
growing up in the 80's.
Originally, the intent of Affirmative Action stated that if you
had a job that needed to be filled and you had two candidates that
were relatively equal in qualifications, but one was white and
the other was a minority, you SHOULD hire the minority. I have
no problem with Affirmative Action as it was originally created,
but boy, how things have changed.
Today, it's no longer about a level playing field for all people;
it's more about revenge on the transgressions of the white man.
Affirmative Action now is about giving people who do not have the
qualifications or ability to perform a job, enter a university
or receive grants and awards solely on the color of their skin
or gender.
In other words, you deserve the benefits of the American dream
because of the person you are and not the color of your skin.
