Sweeney Todd is Coming
I'm very excited. Sweeney Todd is coming to the theaters this Christmas 2007. It's one of my favorite musicals. I love the story, the music, and the lyrics. It's on of the best Sondheim musicals.
Now Tim Burton has gotten his hands on it. This means it's going to be awesome or it's going to be bad. Judge for yourself.
I'm a passive fan of Tim Burton. When he's good, he's good. When he's not, he's weird. Entertainment Weekly recently did an article on this production. He had Johnny Depp in mind for the role for a very long time and his wife, Helena Bohnam Carter had to audition for Sondheim for the role.
I've seen bits of the trailer. The look is great, but they took away the operatic nature of the play. Depp is an average singer, but definitely would not be cast on Broadway for this role. My hope is that its good and I would like it to be good.
I also like the fact that they are focusing on the grusomeness that should have been a part of the original play. Just how much does Sondheim's music take a back seat in the movie?
