Top Ten 2003 Movies

10. Daredevil

coverI've always been a fan of Daredevil. In fact, I have the famous Daredevil vs. Hulk comic. So anyways, I was excited to find out that Daredevil was coming to the big screen and excited that Jennifer Garner was playing Electra. Too bad Ben Affleck had to play the lead. Regardless, I like this film. I think that it captured the internal conflict of Matt Murdock and effectively started the series. Now the question is will they continue the series?

9. A Mighty Wind

A Mighty WindAs you have figured out from my website, I am a professional improvisation performer. I'm a huge fan of the genre. So naturally I would gravitate to the anything that even hints of improv. A Mighty Wind is the continuation of the improvised movie. Armed with an outline, the cast hilariously gives us a glimpse into the world of Folk Music. My only complaint is that the music is not a parody like Spinal Tap's music was. It's a true attempt to write real folk music. A very good attempt I might add.

8. Shanghai Knights

In the year of a million sequels only two have really stood out. The best is my number 3 pick. The first is Shanghai Knights. Shanghai Knights is far superior to the original. The problem with the original is that the action was cut to tight and was often hard to follow. Shanghai Knights fixes these problems and effectively interweaves a half-way decent story to hold the fights scenes together.

7. Seabiscuit

OK, I really didn't expect to like this movie, but I did. The trailers make this look real sappy, but it's an excellent story of hope during a time in American history that needed hope.

6. Elf

Two words: Will Farrell. Elf was destined to be a formula film. Let's face it, just read the plot and you probably know what's going to happen. And yes, Elf is predictable. This movie's success can only be attributed to Will Farrell being able to pull of the role of an adult that is still a child. It's also incredibly clean. There is no bad language. Fun for all ages.

5. Pirates of the Carribean

If Will Farrell made Elf, then Johnny Depp made Pirates. Depp takes an original spin on what it means to be a pirate. Without it, this movie is just another lame Disney film that's based on a ride. Next to Depp are the special effects. Very creepy and very effective.

4. American Wedding

As a Christian, I am morally opposed to this movie. As a movie lover, I loved this film. Yes, it sexually charged and inappropriate to my high standards, but hey... What sets the American Pie series apart from the rest of the teen sex comedies, is the fact that you like the characters. You're invested in their success.

3. X-2

Comic books have always been difficult to make into movies. The Hulk is this year's grand failure. The first X-Men was great with a nice balance of introducing characters and story. What makes X-2 better is that they didn't have to introduce characters again. They went right into story. One of the great scenes is at the beginning introducing my favorite character, Nightcrawler.

2. Finding Nemo

What company is about to make the biggest mistake in it's long history? That company would be Disney. With Finding Nemo, Pixar only owes Disney two more movies. And after Finding Nemo, you wonder why would Disney want to sever relations with a production company that has yet to produce anything less that a smash hit. Because Michael Eisner is stupid. Finding Nemo is a masterful film in both presentation and story. Sure the effects are first rate, but without a first rate story, you have nothing. That's Pixar's strength, the funny and touching story of a father's adventure to find his son.

1. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

I'm very sad that the Trilogy is over. I'm writing this from the perspective of a person who has not read the books. Wow, what a ride. The final film is definitely better than the first two. It's got action and believable drama. This is my pick for the movie that deserve the Academy Award, but won't get it.
